Claus Richter | Lippstadt May 28th – August 27t Claus Richter | Lippstadt
May 28th – August 27th 2023
In an elaborate staging of models, architectural elements, pictures, drawings, movable objects and countless mementos, Richter transformed the rooms of the new Museumsdepot into a walk-in memory of the Lippstadt of his childhood and youth that can be experienced by the senses, and humorously show what has shaped him as an artist to this day from all these memories and moments.

Yesterday, our members were able to immerse themselves in the working methods of artist Frances Scholz. In her Cologne studio, Scholz presented us with paintings, textile designs, videos as well as prints and gave us an understanding of her multi-layered definition of painting. In the artist's works, not only her interdisciplinary approach, but also the dialogue between the artificial and the natural world is repeatedly taken up and questioned. We sincerely thank Frances Scholz for this insight into her work and look forward to @clagesgallery presenting a solo exhibition of the artist in March 2024.

Four Journeys by Daniel Maier-Reimer as presented Four Journeys by Daniel Maier-Reimer as presented by Mark Dion
May 05th– June 17th 2023
In this exhibition Daniel Maier-Reimer tasked Mark Dion to orchestrate an environment to host a selection of four past travels: the most recent one to Mount Etna (2022), from the Tyrrhenian Sea to Adria (2013), to the Kaliningrad Peninsula (2001) and to Lapland (1990). The exhibition space takes the form of a 1970s travel agency. Almost obso-lete in today’s world of internet accessibility, a travel agency was an important infrastructure from the 1960s all the way to the early 1990s, instrumental in establishing a global obsession with leisure, free time, and escapism. Filled with posters, info brochures, travel books, miniature airplane models, globes, and various knick-knacks, the travel agency rapidly became a kind of imaginative historical archive. Daniel’s journeys are sorted into this system.

[OPENING] Claus Richter | Lippstadt Opening: Sun [OPENING]
Claus Richter | Lippstadt
Opening: Sunday May 28th 2023, 11:00 am
In his works, Richter often refers to his own childhood and creates a consciously nostalgic and playful world full of fantasy and freedom. This ideal world collides with a disenchanted and shattered everyday reality, which Richter also observes with a melancholy eye in his works. Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, Lippstadt has always been a city full of inspiration and stimulation for Richter. Long-forgotten toy shops, kiosks, secret corners, places of magic and enchantment will be brought to life for the exhibition, as will fleeting memories and experiences in and around his hometown.

Opening: Sunday, May 28th 2023, 11:00 am
We are thrilled to announce Claus Richter’s solo exhibition „Lippstadt“.
The artist Claus Richter, born in Lippstadt in 1971, repeatedly deals with memories and wishful worlds in his paintings, films and room-sized installations. For the exhibition "Lippstadt," the artist, will completely revisit the still empty rooms of the new Lippstadt City Archive. In an elaborate staging of models, architectural elements, pictures, drawings, movable objects and countless mementos, Richter will transform the rooms into a walk-in memory of the Lippstadt of his childhood and youth that can be experienced by the senses and humorously show what has shaped him as an artist to this day from all these memories and moments.

Daniel Maier-Reimer | Four Journeys as presented by Mark Dion
Opening Friday, May 5th, 6 - 9 pm
Archaeology, field work, excavation, picking up the shovel and reassembling the past are often implemented in both artists’ approach. Daniel Maier-Reimer works intensely with the site, or better sites, of his works and the role that photography plays, when called upon. The artist takes a trip and the only thing he brings back with him home is a single photograph, a picture. It is then handed over to someone else who is tasked to introduce it to the matrix of art under their own care and supervision.

“There is nothing wrong with being unambiguous […] Ambiguities, on the other hand, are discomforting because further observations, analyses or reflections seem necessary before a decision can be reached.“
Hoffjann, Olaf: Die Flucht in die Ambiguität. Wiesbaden, 2022
I am sure Shila Khatami is aware that ambiguities are discomforting and that she makes deliberate use of them. There is no point looking for bite-sized facts, because her paintings fight tooth and nail against being crammed into a single category. At a close look, seemingly arbitrary patches of colour can become an arrangement of minimalist compositions, and the traditional, natural canvas can just as quickly evoke a graffiti-covered house wall. The title Incidents reflects the ambivalence of the form and the responsibility lies with us viewers to either think of avoiding disruptions in incident management, to picture a series of individual actions, or to wrap the word in the global political context of Violent Incidents [...]

Completely submerged underwater, the protagonists attempt to engage in everyday actions, with the longed-for result constantly failing. The kiss does not create closeness and the brawl as a desperate reaction to one’s own impotence does not produce a winner because the liquid mass - even if its presence is invisible - weighs on every movement.

It is precisely the gap described by Nuar Alsadir that Aileen Murphy’s drawings also seem to occupy. They are portraits of shrill figures with a strange awkwardness about them. Their open mouths suggest a moment of loss of control - a spontaneous burst of laughter that dissolves the façade and places the body in a vulnerable state. In the same way, the characters demonstrate a persistent attempt to turn the inside out, to shed a part that no longer belongs to them.

In Ludovic Beillard's and Angélique Aubrit’s In Ludovic Beillard's and Angélique Aubrit’s joint installation, miniature as well as oversized puppets interact with their surrounding in various ways. While the softness of the costumes suggests a flexible adaptation, the wooden limbs hint at a more arduous manner of movement. The composite body shells are literally placeholders that direct the attention to something other, negated, or absent in the space. They form a closed reality and thus open up the possibility of viewing a social structure and the roles participating in it from the outside:

A cardboard box symbolizes the temporary impossibi A cardboard box symbolizes the temporary impossibility of return or arrival. With the aim of maintaining a physical as well as emotional connection with their family, Overseas Filipino Workers have been sending several million packages a year to their home country since 1973, known as Balikbayan Boxes. For the two sculptural arrangements, Jasmin Werner invited her mother to select items for a Balikbayan Box. What is intended as a gesture of affection and care by the sender is simultaneously mixed with an ambivalent sense of guilt toward the home left behind. And something else emerges from the layered architecture of the sculptures: a sense of dependence that ensures the continuation of any relationship. At the end of the exhibition, the products will be shipped. What remains is the scanned document from 1974 on all-weather poster.

Home represents the promise of giving the self a Home represents the promise of giving the self a solid form with the help of the surrounding space. By mimetically scanning supposedly incidental angles of a living space, Bradley Davies’ paintings explore the interior as a potential reflection of the inhabitant. In doing so, the view of an albino frog living in an aquarium reveals a reciprocal truth concerning the shaping through the home: It is not only a place where we retreat to adapt to the world; from here we also tame the world so as to shape it to our liking and gain a sense of control.
Anders Dickson’s sculptures seem to follow a similar urge: the interwoven microcosms convey a model-like approach to one's own environment. Alternately shiny and dull materials combine technoid elements with corporeal fragments to create fragile-looking objects. Sprawled out as if on a bed, the assemblages allude to the nocturnal dream in which disconnected shards of the day are pieced together and cracks are temporarily repaired. The recurring mental restoration that takes place during sleep marks the bed above all as a place of constant return and renewed departures.

The walls form a silent vessel for everything that has not been expressed in public. In Daphne Ahlers’ seating ensemble, the absent bodies are staged by two opposing forms. The armchairs instigate a conversation, but avoid direct confrontation. Only the transformed buttons, as they are usually mounted on street lights, give hope of being able to transport the innermost desires as a signal to the outside.

Perhaps living means nothing other than constantly categorizing. The functional division into kitchen, bathroom or bedroom choreographs habits and sensations, creates hierarchies and produces leftovers. The home embodies an ongoing digestive process that drives the construction of subjectivity. A place where the self can be seen outside of oneself because its substance is also revealed in the surrounding things – even the insignificant and ugly ones.
Based on the connection between interior and interiority, Interior Acts presents the interior not only as a showcase of private states, but also reflects its performative forces, which in turn affect the inner life.
***
