Thursday (16th) and Friday (17th) will be the last Thursday (16th) and Friday (17th) will be the last two days of 'Interior Acts'
Thank you to Susanne Mierzwiak (@susannemierzwiak) for putting together such a wonderful show.
And a big thanks to all the artists:
Daphne Ahlers (@ffiinnii)
Angélique Aubrit & Ludovic Beillard (@i_saw_you_in_my_dreams & @ludovicbeillard)
Bradley Davies (@broadleigh_davies)
Anders Dickson (@dicksonanders)
Patrick Jolley and Reynold Reynolds
Aileen Murphy
Jasmin Werner (@jasmin1werner)
Come by from 1-6pm!
The act of effort required to communicate under th The act of effort required to communicate under the weight of normality is shown by the domestic scenes in Patrick Jolley and Reynold Reynolds’ film. Completely submerged underwater, the protagonists attempt to engage in everyday actions, with the longed-for result constantly failing. The kiss does not create closeness and the brawl as a desperate reaction to one’s own impotence does not produce a winner because the liquid mass - even if its presence is invisible - weighs on every movement.

It is precisely the gap described by Nuar Alsadir that Aileen Murphy’s drawings also seem to occupy. They are portraits of shrill figures with a strange awkwardness about them. Their open mouths suggest a moment of loss of control - a spontaneous burst of laughter that dissolves the façade and places the body in a vulnerable state. In the same way, the characters demonstrate a persistent attempt to turn the inside out, to shed a part that no longer belongs to them.

In Ludovic Beillard's and Angélique Aubrit’s In Ludovic Beillard's and Angélique Aubrit’s joint installation, miniature as well as oversized puppets interact with their surrounding in various ways. While the softness of the costumes suggests a flexible adaptation, the wooden limbs hint at a more arduous manner of movement. The composite body shells are literally placeholders that direct the attention to something other, negated, or absent in the space. They form a closed reality and thus open up the possibility of viewing a social structure and the roles participating in it from the outside:

A cardboard box symbolizes the temporary impossibi A cardboard box symbolizes the temporary impossibility of return or arrival. With the aim of maintaining a physical as well as emotional connection with their family, Overseas Filipino Workers have been sending several million packages a year to their home country since 1973, known as Balikbayan Boxes. For the two sculptural arrangements, Jasmin Werner invited her mother to select items for a Balikbayan Box. What is intended as a gesture of affection and care by the sender is simultaneously mixed with an ambivalent sense of guilt toward the home left behind. And something else emerges from the layered architecture of the sculptures: a sense of dependence that ensures the continuation of any relationship. At the end of the exhibition, the products will be shipped. What remains is the scanned document from 1974 on all-weather poster.

Home represents the promise of giving the self a Home represents the promise of giving the self a solid form with the help of the surrounding space. By mimetically scanning supposedly incidental angles of a living space, Bradley Davies’ paintings explore the interior as a potential reflection of the inhabitant. In doing so, the view of an albino frog living in an aquarium reveals a reciprocal truth concerning the shaping through the home: It is not only a place where we retreat to adapt to the world; from here we also tame the world so as to shape it to our liking and gain a sense of control.
Anders Dickson’s sculptures seem to follow a similar urge: the interwoven microcosms convey a model-like approach to one's own environment. Alternately shiny and dull materials combine technoid elements with corporeal fragments to create fragile-looking objects. Sprawled out as if on a bed, the assemblages allude to the nocturnal dream in which disconnected shards of the day are pieced together and cracks are temporarily repaired. The recurring mental restoration that takes place during sleep marks the bed above all as a place of constant return and renewed departures.

It is a remarkable as well as disturbing observati It is a remarkable as well as disturbing observation that with each change of tenant, structures by people, whose stories and longings are long forgotten, are taken over and continued. The walls form a silent vessel for everything that has not been expressed in public. In Daphne Ahlers’ seating ensemble, the absent bodies are staged by two opposing forms. The armchairs instigate a conversation, but avoid direct confrontation. Only the transformed buttons, as they are usually mounted on street lights, give hope of being able to transport the innermost desires as a signal to the outside.

Perhaps living means nothing other than constantly categorizing. The functional division into kitchen, bathroom or bedroom choreographs habits and sensations, creates hierarchies and produces leftovers. The home embodies an ongoing digestive process that drives the construction of subjectivity. A place where the self can be seen outside of oneself because its substance is also revealed in the surrounding things – even the insignificant and ugly ones.
Based on the connection between interior and interiority, Interior Acts presents the interior not only as a showcase of private states, but also reflects its performative forces, which in turn affect the inner life.
***

The discourse on the attachment of the trace which is always inherent in photography is as old as photography itself. And yet, in Anne Pöhlmann's sixth solo exhibition at Clages, it is as current and evident as never before. Just as Barthes postulated the inscription of a visual trace, he posited a connection between photography and motherhood in the same vein. The indexical bond between the photographed and the recipient resembles "a kind of umbilical cord" that almost symbiotically connects the depicted object with the gaze of the viewer. With Comforters, Pöhlmann not only explores her photographic-artistic practice, but also her role as a new mother and reveals - often in a painterly abstract way - personal traces of the past years of her life. Propagated as impossible by many professional colleagues, the compatibility of being an artist and a mother continues to be a socio-economic challenge well into the 21st century. From disregard to outright rejection, a systemic and precarious belief system resulting in an outright negation of motherhood propagated by Abramović a.o, is ubiquitous. In Comforters, Pöhlmann links this “softly” connotated problem (due to its link to femininity) with the “hardness” of the technical possibilities offered by digital photography […]

We don't even have the language and social space to talk about something like the fragility and impressions of scrota without irony, let alone find the plural form of scrotum without consulting a dictionary. And I think this is one of the central points that made Monika choose this subject (apart from certain studio processes to which we non-producers principally have no access to), that we may be forced to enter certain spaces of engagement that we otherwise tend to avoid. The slight shift to monkeys and their dangling scrota now offers the opportunity to revisit Stricker's interest in the subject. After all, the change of species goes hand in hand with a casual, almost provocative presentation of the scrota.

Where do we escape to, when our outer and inner worlds come crushing down on us? Escapism can be triggered by personal and collective experiences alike, and lead to a search for refuge in the physical or immaterial realm. The exhibition SHAPES OF SHELTER presents seven artistic positions that deal with mechanisms of searching for shelter. Fragile being, that does not have to be suppressed nor accommodated, emerges as the core narrative. (Text excerpt)

part of: HOMMAGE A MUSEUM ABTEIBERG - 50th Edition Jahresgaben
Opening today, 7 pm
This work by artist Frances Scholz contains two 3D-printed objects adopted from the film project FALLEN (Earth Wall), shot earlier this year in Connecticut, USA.
Silver objects transform the "Hommage à Museum Abteiberg" box into a "standing" permeable work and refer to the film footage of living sculptural situations in wooded areas of former quarries.
This film work becomes a journey into previous times of living myths, as well as fictional futuristic visions in the future. At the same time, they are also layered narratives of knowledge and being, in which secure orders and presuppositions are no longer valid. Another form of looking and observing.
In the style of the science fiction narrative by J.G. Ballard in his legendary work The Crystal World, these crystallised elements exist both as sculptures, as cinematic forms and as objects in an expanded field of action.

Has our art been too exhausted by sophistication?
R.B. Kitaj
The depiction of a monkey actually always stands for something else, especially in paintings. Most of the time, monkeys act as a distorted picture of mankind, they articulate the tragic dimension of human existence, of life as a cultivated animal. Clearly, Rococo singerie painting only worked satirically because apes are not too distant from us humans in terms of evolutionary biology, which draws attention to the subtle differences. And this is, in a way, the precondition for the exhibition "Natürliche Enthüllung", with which Monika Stricker continues her engagement with the scrotum, which has now been going on for several years […]

Last week to visit Oliver Husain | Literal Umbre Last week to visit
Oliver Husain | Literal Umbrella
September 2nd - October 15th
@oliverhusain
An ever-unfolding invitation:
As Husain has described elsewhere—and visualized in earlier works such as Purfled Promises (2011)—the closed curtain of a theatre is a promise, an invitation; a presumed border between real and fictive worlds. Throughout Literal Umbrella, as the titular object continues to twirl and spin, these traditional boundaries begin to dissolve. Where does a prop end and a dancer begin? How does the architecture of a theatre meet the collective body of an audience? When does the fantasy of a projected image start to absorb narratives, politics, and possible threats that exist beyond itself? Husain’s exhibition exposes the infrastructures of world-making that exist in filmic and theatrical contexts: the projection screen, the unfolding curtain, the set design, the TV studio—they undulate, they blur, they graze against each other, their edges disappear.
In Foily Footlights (2022)—which also features a score by Cheong—an audience in fancy dress stares in rapt attention as Husain twirls an umbrella onstage, his gesture timed with the familiar hum of film reels on a projector. As another chandelier sways above, the curtain closes and reopens to an enthusiastic standing ovation. It’s the awe and pleasure found in the unfolding promise of a screen—the imagined worlds that cinema can invite viewers to enter, to lose ourselves within. As Literal Umbrella reminds us, from immersive pleasures to geopolitical anxieties, these promises can carry more than we realize.
