Anne Pöhlmann | Comforters solo exhibition at Cl Anne Pöhlmann | Comforters
solo exhibition at Clages
December 9th - January 28th
Propagated as impossible by many professional colleagues, the compatibility of being an artist and a mother continues to be a socio-economic challenge well into the 21st century. From disregard to outright rejection, a systemic and precarious belief system resulting in an outright negation of motherhood propagated by Abramović a.o, is ubiquitous. In Comforters, Pöhlmann links this “softly” connotated problem (due to its link to femininity) with the “hardness” of the technical possibilities offered by digital photography […]

Opening Friday, December 9th, 6 - 9pm
The discourse on the attachment of the trace which is always inherent in photography is as old as photography itself. And yet, in Anne Pöhlmann's sixth solo exhibition at Clages, it is as current and evident as never before. Just as Barthes postulated the inscription of a visual trace he posited a connection between photography and motherhood in the same vein. The indexical bond between the photographed and the recipient resembles "a kind of umbilical cord" that almost symbiotically connects the depicted object with the gaze of the viewer. With Comforters, Pöhlmann not only explores her photographic-artistic practice, but also her role as a new mother and reveals - often in a painterly abstract way - personal traces of the past years of her life.

***

We don't even have the language and social space to talk about something like the fragility and impressions of scrota without irony, let alone find the plural form of scrotum without consulting a dictionary. And I think this is one of the central points that made Monika choose this subject (apart from certain studio processes to which we non-producers principally have no access to), that we may be forced to enter certain spaces of engagement that we otherwise tend to avoid. The slight shift to monkeys and their dangling scrota now offers the opportunity to revisit Stricker's interest in the subject. After all, the change of species goes hand in hand with a casual, almost provocative presentation of the scrota.

Where do we escape to, when our outer and inner worlds come crushing down on us? Escapism can be triggered by personal and collective experiences alike, and lead to a search for refuge in the physical or immaterial realm. The exhibition SHAPES OF SHELTER presents seven artistic positions that deal with mechanisms of searching for shelter. Fragile being, that does not have to be suppressed nor accommodated, emerges as the core narrative. (Text excerpt)

Frances Scholz | FALLEN Silver Arm, 2022 part of Frances Scholz | FALLEN Silver Arm, 2022
part of: HOMMAGE A MUSEUM ABTEIBERG - 50th Edition Jahresgaben
Opening today, 7 pm
This work by artist Frances Scholz contains two 3D-printed objects adopted from the film project FALLEN (Earth Wall), shot earlier this year in Connecticut, USA.
Silver objects transform the "Hommage à Museum Abteiberg" box into a "standing" permeable work and refer to the film footage of living sculptural situations in wooded areas of former quarries.
This film work becomes a journey into previous times of living myths, as well as fictional futuristic visions in the future. At the same time, they are also layered narratives of knowledge and being, in which secure orders and presuppositions are no longer valid. Another form of looking and observing.
In the style of the science fiction narrative by J.G. Ballard in his legendary work The Crystal World, these crystallised elements exist both as sculptures, as cinematic forms and as objects in an expanded field of action.

Has our art been too exhausted by sophistication?
R.B. Kitaj
The depiction of a monkey actually always stands for something else, especially in paintings. Most of the time, monkeys act as a distorted picture of mankind, they articulate the tragic dimension of human existence, of life as a cultivated animal. Clearly, Rococo singerie painting only worked satirically because apes are not too distant from us humans in terms of evolutionary biology, which draws attention to the subtle differences. And this is, in a way, the precondition for the exhibition "Natürliche Enthüllung", with which Monika Stricker continues her engagement with the scrotum, which has now been going on for several years […]

Last week to visit Oliver Husain | Literal Umbre Last week to visit
Oliver Husain | Literal Umbrella
September 2nd - October 15th
@oliverhusain
An ever-unfolding invitation:
As Husain has described elsewhere—and visualized in earlier works such as Purfled Promises (2011)—the closed curtain of a theatre is a promise, an invitation; a presumed border between real and fictive worlds. Throughout Literal Umbrella, as the titular object continues to twirl and spin, these traditional boundaries begin to dissolve. Where does a prop end and a dancer begin? How does the architecture of a theatre meet the collective body of an audience? When does the fantasy of a projected image start to absorb narratives, politics, and possible threats that exist beyond itself? Husain’s exhibition exposes the infrastructures of world-making that exist in filmic and theatrical contexts: the projection screen, the unfolding curtain, the set design, the TV studio—they undulate, they blur, they graze against each other, their edges disappear.
In Foily Footlights (2022)—which also features a score by Cheong—an audience in fancy dress stares in rapt attention as Husain twirls an umbrella onstage, his gesture timed with the familiar hum of film reels on a projector. As another chandelier sways above, the curtain closes and reopens to an enthusiastic standing ovation. It’s the awe and pleasure found in the unfolding promise of a screen—the imagined worlds that cinema can invite viewers to enter, to lose ourselves within. As Literal Umbrella reminds us, from immersive pleasures to geopolitical anxieties, these promises can carry more than we realize.

A shield from bad weather:
The androgynous, silent dancer in Model of a Glasses-free Lenticular 3D Cinema as Conceived by Semyon Ivanov in Moscow, 1940 ~ Based on Second- hand Information ~ (2022) is moving across Husain’s bedazzled approximation of a Soviet-designed stereoscopic screen. The subject of the artist’s research for the past few years, this parallax screen technology was developed in the USSR in the early 1940s, reportedly the first of its kind to allow for immersive 3D film viewing without the required support of glasses or other devices. Through the scant reports emerging from beyond—what would shortly become—the Iron Curtain, film journalists in the West marveled at the technical and cinematic achievement of the Soviets. Choice quotes from this research animate the subsequent video work in Husain’s exhibition, bouncing across the screen like enthusiastic taglines in 1950s-era movie trailers, accompanied by a twinkling, percussive soundtrack by musician Victoria Cheong. However, as Husain’s narrative follows—supported through research from academic Sanja Obradovic—the utopian possibilities of the Soviet’s stereoscopic raster screen soon became entwined with Cold War-era anxieties: in the eyes of American journalists, the screen transmuted from liberatory technology to anti-diplomatic deception, from Holy Grail to treacherous Chimera. Had the invention ever existed in the first place? As war planes and UFOs glide through the skies in the background of Ivanov’s Invention (2022), it becomes clear that cinema has always acted as an environment where audiences can process our relationships to war, imperialism, and the lingering threat of otherness.

A performative flourish:
Lined with bold patterns and images of glitzy crystal chandeliers, the umbrellas of Oliver Husain’s new exhibition punctuate the spaces they occupy — each with a flatness that unfolds to slice wide curves through the air. While many meet the familiar scale of a human body, one swells outwards in size, engulfing the full volume of the gallery’s first room like a theatrical setpiece. It’s covered with decorative transparent shapes, which allow the giant umbrella to dance playfully between its relationships with foreground and background.
Across Clages, through experiments with found film footage, digital animation, ink drawing, and sculptural objects, the umbrella’s unusual choreography continues. A frilly parasol provides a counterbalance to an animated dancer’s graceful, almost syrupy gestures, their movements projected against a circular screen shimmering with black ribbon. Umbrellas twirl, ooze, and become fractal in a series of ink works by the artist, hand-drawn translations of AI-generated images that were responses to the prompt dancing umbrella. In each of these works, the exhibition’s titular prop seems to absorb a vortex of contradictory forces: flatness and depth, gesture and stillness, folding and unfolding and folding again, all with a twist of the wrist and an expansive flourish.

@isabellafuernkaes
The core visual element of Open Secrets by Isabella Fürnkäs is a video collage that is projected (through video mapping) onto an enclosure that is pyramid in shape. The object given its size, a height of 150 cm, so that the top of the work approaches the neck of many viewers as well as its stance resting directly on the floor recalls an intimate dwelling, specifically the structure of a tent. The surface onto which the video is projected is a patchwork of monochrome silk switches that appear as skins sewn together to stretch over the stainless-steel polls that shape the triangular contour of the sculpture. Taken together the work, like other installations by Fürnkäs, uses the “cut up” to evoke the deeply psychoanalytic motifs of child, the other, the clown, or the insane but the work is not strictly inward-looking. Natascha Borowsky and Anne Pöhlmann
represent different photographic approaches, representing two generations of Dusseldorf photography. In a concentrated series of works Natascha Borowsky dedicates herself to the representability and juxtaposition of matter and materiality, found in natural history as well as in cultural-historical objects. Anne Pöhlmann's works reflect the constantly changing conditions of digital photography. She prints her serial works on posters, banners, plastics or textiles and develops specific spatial installations for them. The examination of
materiality, the questioning of the representability of matter in the photographic medium connects and distinguishes the two photographers.

Deep azure water. Calm ripples and waves over the hidden depths. Everything is turned into slightly blurred hues.
This photograph was taken by Daniel Maier-Reimer on one of his many travels; it is the only picture he took in Lapland in 1991. In a way this gives the work a representative function of the whole journey, but at the same time it does not give any information at all. Colliding with the traditional idea of photography, Maier-Reimer hides away more with this work, than he puts on display. In this way the perception is anything but second-hand. Instead the photographs create ever new individual spaces for our own experience, weaving our own view and being-in-the-world around the artist’s framed explorations.
